Welcome
The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) is pleased to welcome
you to this distance learning opportunity produced through a project funded by
the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), U. S. Department of Justice.
Intimate partner domestic violence victims suffer physical, emotional, sexual,
and economic abuse perpetrated by current or former spouses and other intimate
partners. This form of terrorism within homes affects not only intimate
partners, but also children or other vulnerable adults living in these homes,
neighbors and bystanders, and first responders who may be among those injured,
killed, or emotionally traumatized at the hands of domestic violence
perpetrators.
Community corrections agencies and professionals who supervise defendants and
offenders released in the community on pretrial release, probation supervision,
or parole have a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the safety and
well-being of domestic violence victims through effective supervision of
domestic violence offenders. APPA has developed guidelines for the community
supervision of domestic violence perpetrators that encourage a level of
victim-centered supervision commensurate with the potential risk the offender
represents rather than the criminal charges and convictions imposed (often
misdemeanors).
Through this distance learning training, you will learn about the guidelines and
recommended strategies for supervising domestic violence offenders to achieve
the goals of increased victim safety, offender accountability, and offender
behavior change.
You must register to participate in the training. You may register now or
